Welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses
If you’ve ever dreamed of walking through a desert that suddenly turns into a series of turquoise lagoons, welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil.
I filmed this journey to show what most travelers overlook: miles of pure white sand dunes stretching endlessly toward the horizon, interrupted only by bright, rain-filled lagoons. It’s one of the most surreal places I’ve ever seen and truly one of Brazil’s hidden natural wonders.
What Makes It So Unreal
The name Lençóis Maranhenses means “the sheets of Maranhão,” describing the soft, undulating dunes that look like white sheets from above. During the rainy season, thousands of freshwater lagoons appear between the dunes, each one shimmering in hues of blue and green.
While filming, I was struck by how quickly the colors changed. One moment, the lagoons glowed emerald green; the next, they reflected the sky like a mirror. Every few steps revealed a new scene more unbelievable than the last.
Best Time to Visit Lençóis Maranhenses
Timing is everything if you want to experience the park in full bloom.
- Rainy season (January–May): Lagoons begin to fill.
- Peak season (May–August): Lagoons are full, clear, and perfect for swimming.
- Dry season (September–December): Lagoons fade, revealing sculpted dunes and new sand patterns.
For the most photogenic experience, plan your visit between June and August.
How to Get There
Getting here takes a bit of effort, but the reward is worth it.
- Fly to São Luís, Maranhão.
- Drive approximately four hours to Barreirinhas, the park’s main gateway.
- For a quieter experience, consider staying in Atins or Santo Amaro, smaller villages with fewer visitors and a more local vibe.
Most exploration inside the park is done via 4×4 jeep tours, boat rides, or guided hikes. Local guides know the safest and most scenic lagoons, especially when water levels change.
What to Do in Lençóis Maranhenses
- Swim in the Lagoons: The clear, warm water is irresistible.
- Watch the Sunset from the Dunes: Golden light and long shadows create incredible photos.
- Hike or Sandboard: Some tours offer gentle hikes or sandboarding sessions.
- Capture Drone Footage: The aerial views are stunning, but check park regulations first.
- Stay Overnight Nearby: Barreirinhas has the most options, but Atins and Santo Amaro offer more remote experiences.

Filming here was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Even in a country famous for its beaches, rainforests, and vibrant cities, this landscape stands apart as a natural wonder that feels untouched by time.
